Sulphur Sunday 8/9 7.5, JP MR 119

Got a late start, with little wind blowing up the last 20 miles to Evanston. Saw three Sandhill Cranes halfway to the lake from the highway. Sulphur had some good caps when we pulled in at ~2:00 PM. Duane B. gliding around on a foil (5.0?) and a couple other sailors on the water - Vern ____, who later said he was getting back into sailing after some years off, flying around on his 7.5. Also a friend of his, whose name I didn't get, learning to uphaul and get going on a 5.2 or something and a 140-liter board. (whew - great balance!) Tim Knab on shore between sessions, (long time no see, Tim!) said it had been pretty good for a bit.

Wind lightened so we rigged 7.5 & 7.0. Just then it picked up again, so rigged a 6.0 for my partner. But of course it dropped again and 7.5/7.0 was the call about 2:40 when we headed out. Very nice westerly sailing. Some slogs, but lots of planers on the big gear for the next two hours, and lots of planing jibes on the sides. Duane at one point took advantage of a long lull to go fishboarding. Tim got out on his pretty cherry Logosz and Jimmy Lewis Mudshark fin with a 7.5 for some blazing runs as well.

Only one crazy wind shift, to the north for about 20-30 minutes, then it was westerly again. I came in about 5:15 on a white-knuckled ride across the lake, expecting a full explosion near the beach. Survived and we were done. Only one kite out, launching from the other shore about 4:00 or so. 17M! Was going quite well until some of the crazier big gusts. But as it steadied and calmed down, he got good rides as well. Tim and Duane headed down for more as we headed back to Evanston to explore the liquor stores (for non-alcoholic beverages only, of course).

Saw a Mountain Bluebird getting dinner and some antelope at an exit we stopped at briefly on the way home. Pretty stellar day for wind and a beautiful landscape, as always this time of year.
