Advice on new gear

Postby JeffGerke » Wed Jul 01, 2009 8:04 pm

I have a budget of $1300-$1400 to buy a windsurfing setup. I've owned crappy gear before so this time I want to get some decent stuff that I am going to enjoy sailing with. Do you guys think I can do this on the budget I have? I'm hoping to get stuff that is around 3 or 4 years old. I know how to water start and can kind of use a harness but can not get in the straps or jibe yet. I've sailed at the Event Site a couple times. I have to water start to turn around. Anyway, below is what I am thinking about so far.

Board - Something like a Bic Techno 133 or 148. Starboard Go 133 or 144 or something similar. I want to get something that will handle a wide range of sails. I also need something fairly tough so it won't get all dinged up when I wipe out. I've read some of the HiFly boards are pretty tough and they are cheaper than a lot of the others.
Sails - 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5. I want to get something easy to rig preferably no cams. I've read the Ezzy Freeride is a nice easy rigging sail. Do I want freeride or wave sails?
Masts - Hopefully I can find some deals on some Powerex masts around here.

I guess I would need two masts and two booms to handle the range of sails. Any advice you guys have would be appreciated. I'm going to be in the Gorge the end of the month. Should I try and buy my gear there? Thanks.

Jeff, you could score big by going to the next hood river swap.

Give me a call, about the start board.

Jeff:

FYI I can order boards directly through Starboard.
I will pass on the savings to any windsurfer in Utah.

Wholesale cost plus shipping/handling (about $150.)

So the cost of the go boards are as follows:
2009
Go 122 no EVA 3 $850.00
Go 133 no EVA 5 $850.00
Go 144 no EVA 4 $850.00

Other boards to consider:
2009
Rio L 215 liters $745.00
Rio M 185 liters $745.00
Rio S 165 liters $745.00
2008
(Wood) Carve 144 - 07 $840.00
2009
Futura blue 133 technora 1 $1,010.00
Futura blue 144 technora 1 $1,010.00
Futura blue 155 technora 1 $1,010.00

Jeff, I suggest you go with the GO 144 or 133. Both of them have the same shape as the Futura of same volume, but about 4 lbs heavier and have Tuffskin construction. Techno is is a piece of crap compared to Go/Futura. You can get by with one boom and mast if you select the sails carefully. I think if you have 5.5 to 7.5 sail range, you should be fine. I'll take the deals by Josh if I were you. :)

I've been shopping around on iWindsurf.com a little. How much does it usually cost to ship a board? I'm guessing I will have to pay at least an additional $100 for shipping. And I noticed a lot of sellers don't even ship. I think I might be better off waiting for someone local to have a board to sell or maybe I'll be able to pick one up in the Gorge at the end of the month.

Jeff

I just found this: http://www.windsurfing-direct.com/USA/index.html

These are some pretty good deals. I think their price includes shipping.

I would go with the Bic Nova. (I have been very impressed with its ability to plane in light winds with my 8.0)

The sail they are going to send you is small, but we could find you something bigger here in Utah.
