Hey Jeff,
I agree with Josh, just head down to the Marina (actually called
the Hood River Sail Park), or the Hook (The Hook
has a fully enclosed shallow bay which is very safe), and get a lesson.
Just about everybody will have "children's" gear and instruction.

Also, the ABK clinics are highly touted, and Isthmus (new to the
Gorge this year) is sponsoring them.

If you get a chance, stop in at The Gorge Surf shop. They don't
have a dedicated lessons program (usually they recommend Brian's),
but you'll get to meet some real characters, and maybe get a wind forecast from my counterpart in HR ;*)
