May 2 Corpus Bird Island

Postby John Dubock » Sun May 03, 2009 8:05 am

Willy Sturgis is alive and ripping in TX for the last 3 years...Dave O is here for a month. Rode a 3.8 sail in 25 knots on Sat, no wetsuit, 80 air, 70 water, flattest water you've ever seen. Andy Brandt of the ABK Camp was showing off, endless wind til dark. Free camping next to the water, no kiters allowed, a hero jibe paradise. I'm here for a week so the reports will filter in to torture the UT souls.

Hey John, I hope you try out some of that high wind, you'll love it. Tell Willie hi, and that we miss him. Take some rides for me! SR

It really doesn't matter, but,
I may have been one of the last people to kite there,
i think it was October 2003, maybe 2004.
It wasn't long after that, that the 80 year old windsurfers had it all to them selves :)))

Bird Island is best in May according to some guy who charts how many days on the water he gets. Great gear here, as if Yuba had a world class gear rental on the beach to save your life. Cheap flights via Southwest, ain't no way you're driving 2.5 days across TX unless you're staying a month. Willy is throwing me out of his castle tonite, reports from the Outback camping will have some grit to them, if my tent doesn't blow into the bay I'll be surprised. Wind blows from 11 to dark, and since you're close to the ocean you don't get sunburned like I thought. I renounce Snowbird, let it melt without me.

Sharon and I have sailed there and on south padre island by Brownsville, and love them both. Used to be great gumbo by the bridge, but it has been years. Were both jelous. Have fun and do a jib for us

losing track of days here...endless wind...5.5 Retro, Carve 121, smokin' from 11 to dark...flat water to die for. I know its Tues because I saw the trash truck go by....now if he picks up trash every day, well I'm screwed....Willy is living the dream...he shows at 5pm, rigs in seconds, powers off a few dozen miles in no time...I tell ya, this is a spot for those "I'm sick of skiing, the gorge ain't blowing, and I need a tan, cheap".....jones....

C 99, Retro 5.0, smokin' from 10 to dusk...who sez windsurfing is dead? Go ahead kiterdudes, just try and take me....

p.s. jes' kiddin', make me an offer, save the cookies, once you guys get me and Jim Southwick, its game over. But I want waves, surf.

Carl C would have a field day here, probably already has. Water to the horizon, Willy is in heaven, times it for the 5pm post workout, hits his 99L Style, 5.2 Ezzy SE...

groundhog day, same thing, 10am to dusk, blisters. heat, wind. highlight of the day is pouring cold water jugs over each others heads....the water is too hot to fall into....C 99 5.0, flattened out...Fri might hit 30k, bring it on...please someone send some shade...Dave O is working me over, we're running The Number...."ok, you fly home Sat, chill, load the trailer, the Subie, hit the road for two days, 1200 miles, and bring all the gear back for two weeks, and get a jump on the Gorge"....

http://picasaweb.google.com/hypersailor ... 0567702418 sorry for a few dupes, my arms are too tired to un dupe...

45 knot gusts, me and Dave rented a Starboard Kore 86L 2009, went fr 4.7 to 4.2 real fast as we couldn't make our jibes. Worldwinds is dialed in, walk a few yards into the shop, read the wind meter and they throw a rigged sail at ya....Best $50 I've ever spent, especially since the board new costs $1700. If you want wind data find Mike Murphy, he has 8 years of Stewart Martin like data...oh mama...he has 3 sails, nothin' counts over 5.9, nuthin' under 4.5, and he's done about 800 sailing days....JP 91Liter, don't even ask to buy his board...
